Although known to be uncooperative, the weather this year stayed pleasant for SAB’s annual Sunset Concert and the intramural-sponsored Bike Race.
The orange fencing surrounding the terrace lawn in front of Ridgway Center was reminiscent of last year’s construction, but it didn’t hamper the day’s outcome as students were lined up before the area opened at 5 p.m.
Face painting, banana condom races and mini water pong were some of the pre-concert entertainment provided by student organizations. Winning the best booth awards were mocktails—non-alcoholic cocktails—by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for non-Greek organization and fortunetelling by Phi Mu for Greek groups.
Concertgoers spread out blankets and enjoyed the nice weather. Even Sodexo moved outside for the evening.
While some in the audience stood close to the stage and others grabbed chairs from booths as they closed down, the Royce kicked off “AceStock ’09.”
The audience waited as Cavashawn took the stage. As the night wore on, more students went to rest on the terrace. Cavashawn’s cover of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me” had students singing along and a few jumping.
The crowd grew as the time for headliner Secondhand Serenade neared. After a brief intermission, including a ukulele performance by emcee Joe Camerlengo, the band took the stage.
“The smaller colleges kind of appreciate it more,” said Secondhand frontman John Vesely. “It’s not always this hospitable, so I really appreciate it.”
The concert featured songs from the albums “Awake” and “A Twist in my Story.” While they started off with songs the whole band played on, Vesely did some solo. They kept their popular “Fall for You” for their encore, and had the audience sing part of it.
Following the concert Cavashawn drew a crowd as they signed autographs and talked to audience members.
Although rain was in the forecast, the weather stayed sunny for Saturday’s Bike Race. Chi Omega 1 reclaimed first place in the women’s race after last year’s loss to Team Everybody. Cross-Country came in second and Chi O 2 also took third place.
In the men’s race, Sigma Phi Epsilon retook the win after a loss last year, with Lambda Chi Alpha 1 taking second and Phi Gamma Delta placing third.
